SSL and Google. Why do I need one?

We are advising clients to install an SSL certificate on their site as the world of google is now expecting all domains that are on google to show that they are secure. Previously we only installed these on sites that had an ecommerce element to them or collected credit card information, or other highly sensitive data relating to medical or student records.
